15th October 2012 - New York City - Penn Central Station and Times Square

The train from Jersey City takes you to 33rd St in the middle of Manhattan. It is very busy but very pleasant as you exit the station. You can stop for a coffee to recover from the stress of travelling.
Just a couple of blocks away is Penn Central Station. It is underground under Madison Square Gardens. This is the light and airy foyer.
Outside we have the United States Post Office. It is a huge building with a massive colonnade - this is just part of one side.
We walked away from the centre towards the Hudson River (only 4-5 blocks). A new tower was being built with concrete being pumped up to make the next floor. The pump is a very specialised truck.
The Hudson railroad yards at the exit to Penn Station where the commuter trains are stored ready for the evening peak.
There must have been hundreds of railroad cars here in long rows.
Now I thought the Book of Mormon is an extended Bible. But it is also a Broadway show being advertised on the side of this bus.
Another mode of transport waits outside a hotel.
We wandered into Times Square where the billboards light up the sides of the buildings.
There are thousands of tourists in this area. We can understand only a very few of them. It is very, very busy.
The visitor centre is a convenient place to find toilets.
We sat and watched the crowds wandering by and spotted this girl being photographed (by everybody).
Then we realised she was on a huge billboard, as we all were - and suddenly everybody was looking at that instead.
The lights get brighter as the afternoon moves into evening.
There is so much of it that the adverts lose any impact.
There was a sculpture exhibition in the street. We have no idea what most of the exhibits represented. I guess this is a ball player (about 10ft tall). They were made out of plastic shapes like those used at road works to delineate lanes.
Bob the Builder was there along with Woody to name but two. They pose for photos with you (for a fee).
Its life Jim - but not as we know it! To be fair he was smaller than many Americans we saw.
Lady Gaga looks even better when she is four stories high.
It started raining so we popped into Macy's. Shoes - you can have any colour you like so long as it's white.
