The South Riding RV Travels

28th September 2012 - Winterset IA to Nauvoo IL to Joliet IL

We camped at Hickory Haven just outside Keokuk on the banks of the Missouri. Here we ran into an Airstream convention. They were travelling as a group down the length of the river.
There are some grand houses along the way. This imposing place is in Keokuk.
There is a dam across the Missouri at Keokuk which has a major power station to provide electricity for the region. There are many such installations along the major rivers.
The riverboat is now a museum but is only open on certain days.
This is the waterworks and pumping station.
The railway was carried on a swing bridge over the exit to the lock. The train having passed, the bridge was being opened to allow the passage of a boat.
The lock was capable of taking quite a large boat. A lot of traffic is carried in barges pushed by small tugs.
A view of the stern wheel of the paddle steamer.
A pusher tug with eight barges on its way downstream probably carrying coal or ore of some kind.
The Mormon temple at Nauvoo. Only Mormons are allowed inside and traffic is very restricted around it.
The front of the temple. It looks out over the Missouri river and is quite an imposing building standing up on the hill. The Mormons lived in Nauvoo before they moved to Salt Lake City.
The grass around the base of the tree is different to the rest of the grass. An interesting idea.
The story of the Mormons is told inside the visitor centre. We had expected a museum but in many ways the whole town is the museum, a bit like Williamstown but not as commercial.
A scale model of the town with several thousand houses portrayed. The temple towers over them all..
There are many bronze statues in the gardens portraying the role of the family.
Women and children play an important role.
We could have spent all day there but sadly only had a few hours. So we visited the house of Mr Browning.
He was a very early gunsmith in the west and made a number of major developments. Many of his guns are on display.
This Bowie knife caught my eye because it was made in Sheffield.
The forge was a major part of the workshop which was an integral part of the house.
The outside of the building showing the construction. It has probably been renovated several times.
Note the ropes on the side of the bed with the wedges. This construction gave rise to the expression 'sleep tight'.
We travelled on to Joliet passing this Amtrak train along the way
We also passed through Sheffield IL. The population is 932.
