23rd September 2012 - Manitou Springs CO to Denver CO to Sterling CO

We tried to find a campsite Denver but it proved too difficult. So, it being Sunday, we drove into the centre of Denver and parked not far out.
As with many cities there is some stunning architecture from the middle of the last century. They have a lot more space for city centre roads than we have in Europe.
There are three 'mile high' marks dating from different times as our ability to accurately measure has improved..
The marks are on the steps of the State Capitol. So I would guess that this building (across the square) is the City Hall.
Not that the State Capitol is not grand in its own right. The statue is from the Civil War. Sadly the Capitol is not open for tours at the weekend.
The roof is covered with gold leaf. The inside is quite spectacular as you can see from our earlier visit in 1995.
Denver is not a large city but it does have a collection of skyscrapers.
Another shot of the capitol, the most important building in the city.
You realise how imposing it is when seen from further away so that the whole building can be seen.
Bells found like this in American cities are almost always copies of the Liberty bell which is in Philadelphia.
American cities have their collection of wildlife like this squirrel collecting nuts from the trees in the square. They are not bothered by us at all.
Now is this maintenance or a convention?.
The grandeur of the City Hall.
There are two bronze statues, one of a cowboy and this one of an indian hunter..
It doesn't look so much like a building site from this angle.
Some of the skyscrapers have some interesting features.
We moved on and stopped for some fuel and lunch at a place called Prairie Center with a collection of steel sunflowers towering over the road.
Driving along the interstate we spotted this wind turbine blade.
We carried on minding our own business at 60mph and were OVERTAKEN by that turbine blade. You could see it flexing in the wind.
I think Oversize Load is a bit of an understatement.
A little later we were passed again. This time by a section of the wind turbine tower. There are a lot of turbines in Nebraska and Iowa.
We did catch it again as it left the interstate. Amazing!
