23rd October 2011 - Scottsdale AZ to Boulder City NV

We spent a week in Scottsdale visiting different friends and basically chilling out. Not that it can easily be done in the heat of Arizona.

Eventually it got too hot and we headed out back up towards Las Vegas.

We weren't in a hurry and decided to stop overnight in Boulder City about 20 miles short of Las Vegas. We also stopped there because I had spotted a railway museum belonging to the Nevada Southern Railway (long since defunct).
It was closed but I managed to take some photos. I think they still run some tourist trains and they have the usual odd collection of ancillary vehicles.
They have a mixed collection of ancient passenger vehicles in desperate need of some repair and a coat of paint. The desert is not kind to paint. The locomotive looked freshly painted and is a typical US EMD diesel.
More oddities typical of the light railway. They are not just from this railroad but originate from other even smaller railroads which died even longer ago.
The original railroad was built in the 1890s to tap into mines in the area. This is an ex UP 2-8-0 built in 1896 which was cosmetically .restored in 2005.
They have repainted some of their rolling stock like this caboose. For some reason they always seem to be in better condition than passenger rolling stock.
The remaining rails are part of a branch line built by UP in 1930 to service the building of the Hoover dam. Most of it was recovered during the war. They suffer from weeds as all such lines do although the weeds here are a little different.
Back at the campsite I spotted this bus. The front is at the left of the picture. I have no idea why the back is missing.
