24th September 2011 - Elwha Valley Restoration Project WA

Just to the west of Port  Angeles lies the Elwha River valley. Here two dams were built in the early 1900s. This is the Elwha dam which is 108ft high and generated 26MW of electricity.
Over the next three years at a cost of $350 million, the dams will be removed and the salmon will once again be able to swim up the 70 miles of river in the Olympic national park.
We camped at a site in the valley most of which is First Nations land. Much of the area is untouched forest.
Away from the trails the area is impassable with many generations of fallen trees.
It is difficult to grasp how difficult traversing this country is off the trails..
Heavy machinery is being used to demolish the dams. Here two caterpillar diggers are carrying what looked to be a flatbed railroad car the half mile to the dam.
