29th March 2009 - Old Scottsdale AZ

It being Sunday we took the Scottsdale trolley bus (free) into old Scottsdale and visited the library which we were interested to find open and well patronised. Scottsdale is full of art and sculptures and water features.
We took the kids to a free concert given by the brass and percussion sections of the symphony orchestra.
Each of the instruments was introduced and then various popular pieces were played. It was really oriented at young people and was very good. There was a large range of percussion on show.
Then we wandered through the old town centre looking at the shops and the bronzes in the streets. With all the spring flowers in the sunshine it was very pleasant.
The shops were all very arty (and expensive) but the displays were quite impressive. But there were few prices shown - if you need to ask, you can't afford. We did wonder if these glass pieces on the ceiling are by the same artist as the display in the Desert Botanical Garden, but on closer inspection they are quite different in style.
These chocolates on display in a shop window would not melt in the sun. They are ceramic.

We decided we preferred ice cream!

Many of the buildings are of traditional pueblo origins including this mission church. Some things don't date.
Two of the most interesting bronze pieces were these two figures where the sculptor has developed a method of colouring the bronze. The detail was very fine. The woman is carrying a baby in a cradle board on her back and there is a small child just peeping out from behind her skirt who also carries a baby doll in a toy cradle board.
