Route - May 2009

1800 miles this month which is slightly less than we would normally do but more than enough on these roads. Once we leave the toll roads we are lucky to achieve an average of 30 mph and 150 miles is a long day's drive. We used the toll roads (Mex 15D) down to Tepic but the free roads for about 50 miles around Culiacán. This is because the tolls there are particularly expensive and there is a free alternative. The coast road (Mex 200) is very picturesque down to Playa Azul (13) but is very slow. The road inland to Morelia is fabulous. The bit just to the north of Mexico City is a mess (see the pages). Since then we have found good roads heading back north.

The weather has been kind but very hot. We stayed on the coast where the breezes helped to cool us and inland we have been over 6000ft more or less since we left the coast. We are out of season now since all the Canadians go home at the end of April. We would like to do it earlier in the season.

Campsites are few and far between although we have always managed to find one. Most have been reasonable and we even had WiFi until the third week when we didn't. We have, however, been the only RV on the site almost everywhere.

We spent more time on the coast than perhaps we should since the inland touring of the colonial towns has been hard work and quite tiring. Still we have about reached the end of that although the website is a bit behind.

Mexico is very different to what we were led to expect by American friends. We have experienced no trouble and only been welcomed wherever we have been. It is not unlike Portugal and there are still a lot of Spanish influences. There are very poor areas but most of it seems not unlike parts of Europe in its standard of living.

We are now on the long trek back to the US. This is causing us some planning problems since many of the potential campgrounds seem to have ceased to operate. We will see.
