30th April 2008 - Baraboo WI - International Crane Foundation

We travelled on northwards to Baraboo where we found a wildlife refuge for cranes, run by the International Crane Foundation. They have on display examples of all 15 sub species in the world. Some are on the endangered species list and are subject to special measures with a breeding and reintroduction to the wild program.
Some, like the crowned crane above, are so revered that they are the national bird of their country.

Others just look plain mean. Some of the cages have perspex shields to prevent the birds from attacking the patrons.

Note the different colours of eyes.

The notice boards by each type are most informative so I have reproduced them here.
