Small Mammals California

Small is a relative term. This Visayan warty pig is not that small. The zoo has a wide variety of pigs and pig-like creatures.
Obviously related is this Chacoan peccary although I could be completely wrong. They all look equally ugly!
This isn't a pig but a rodent. Capybaras are the world's largest rodents.
Even odder is this La Plata three-banded armadillo running madly around its enclosure. I finally managed to freeze its movement with the flash.
These sleepy dog-like creatures are called fossa. They were snoozing inside what looked like a hollowed out tree.
Always photogenic are the meerkats. One always seemed to be on guard and they look so comical.
Some of the monkeys share cages with these African spotted necked otters. There are a number of different sorts of otters here - they are obviously another of the zoo's specialities.
This tiny nocturnal marsupial lives in a house where night and day have been reversed so they are active when the visitors are there. To the naked eye the cage appears empty but with the marvels of computer enhancement of digital photos we can see this tiny mouse-like creature. This is almost life size! Next door is an enclosure containing kiwis, which are also nocturnal, but we couldn't see any on either visit.
